I gave my alabaster boxes in church today. What are alabaster boxes? Well, in John 12:1-7 we see the story of Mary, who broke open a box that was filled with what the Amplified Bible says was a "pound of ointment of pure liquid nard (a rare perfume) that was very expensive and she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."
Mary gave Jesus the most precious, expensive, and beautiful thing she had. You and I, we may not have rare perfume to give to Jesus, but we all have something that we just are going to have problems parting with. Want to know what I gave to Jesus today? My mother's pearls and my cornet. Two things that I know in the natural I would never ever part with. But the Lord spoke to my heart this morning and told me to give them to my pastor as an alabaster box. The Lord will reward me, I know. It's almost like being compelled to give up my life, my identity. My mother's pearls I have long desired since I was a child. She rarely wore them but my father bought them for her a long time ago. My cornet, on the other hand, was strictly mine. God gave me the ability to play it just after I became a Christian and I used it for Him when I was younger, but I haven't been given the opportunity recently to play it. For those who aren't aware of what musical instruments are, a cornet is a smaller version of a trumpet.
God wanted me to give these things up so that I would be free. If anything would have happened to these items I would be very upset. However if I give them up freely, I'm free of worry and concern about them. They would have become a god to me if I didn't give them up freely. Actually, I'm more upset and concerned about giving up the cornet than I am about the pearls.
Anyway, I say this to ask the question again: what is the most important thing in your life that God wants you to give up? What's YOUR alabaster box? Are you willing to give it up so God can use it? It doesn't have to be material. It can be an ability, a talent, even your life. What is it and are you willing to give it up completely so God can use you?
